John Weston Clayborn, 71, of Marion, passed away at 2:45 am on Wednesday, January 1, 2020, at his home in Marion surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Marion on October 11, 1948, to John A. and Daisy (McCracken) Clayborn. On October 12, 1968, John married Paula L. Johnson, and she survives.
After graduating from Huntington North High School, John served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was drafted in February of 1969 and was medically retired in April of 1971. He had achieved the rank of Sergeant and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Purple Heart, and Bronze Star. He was a first class machine gunner and rifle sharpshooter. After serving in the military, John returned home and graduated from Ball State University with both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education. He went on to teach Industrial Arts in Vincennes for two years, and then for Marion Community Schools for 33 years until his retirement in 2012. At the time of his retirement, John was the President of the Marion Teachers Union. John was a life member of the National Education Association and the Indiana State Teachers Association. He was also a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, as well as the American Legion Post #10.
John enjoyed woodworking and was a skilled master craftsman. He had made several items for his family over the years. He liked reading, especially western novels, and enjoyed watching old western movies. More than anything, John cherished his family, especially his wife, daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter. He will be missed dearly.
In addition to Paula, his loving wife of 51 years, survivors include his father, John A. Clayborn of Warren; daughter, Amber (Clarence) Holmes of Marion; granddaughter, Katelyn Smithson of Marion; two sisters, Janet (Dan) Moriarity of Fort Wayne and Amy Clayborn of Marion; his granddog, Sampson; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his son, Garry Weston Clayborn; mother, Daisy Clayborn; brother, Roy D. Clayborn; and sister, Sharon Clayborn.
A memorial visitation will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, January 16, 2020, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.
Immediately following the time of visitation, a memorial service to celebrate John’s life will begin at 1 p.m. with Rev. Russell Strickler officiating. Burial will take place at Grant Memorial Park.
