The U.S. Army’s Fort Campbell says two military helicopters have crashed in southwestern Kentucky during a routine training mission. The status of the crew members is unknown, it added. The statement posted on Facebook says the two HH-60 Blackhawk helicopters, part of the 101st Airborne Division, crashed around 10 p.m. Wednesday in Trigg County, Kentucky. Governor Andy Beshear wrote on Twitter that “fatalities are expected,” adding that police and emergency officials were responding. The crash is under investigation.

Asian shares are mostly higher following a rally on Wall Street as worries over banks following the collapses of several lenders in recent weeks recede. Forceful actions by regulators have helped to calm markets as investors have turned their focus to how central banks might adjust their interest rate policies to take into account how higher rates might affect lenders. Benchmarks fell in Tokyo, but rose in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Sydney and Seoul. Oil prices rose and U.S. futures also were higher. The S&P 500 is on track to close a tumultuous month with a modest gain.
A ferry carrying about 250 passengers and crew caught fire in the southern Philippines and a governor says 31 people died. The victims either drowned or died in the blaze and were discovered later. Many of those rescued had jumped off the MV Lady Mary Joy 3 in panic at the height of the fire and were plucked from the sea. Gov. Jim Hataman of the southern island province of Basilan said the search and rescue effort was continuing Thursday. Eighteen victims were discovered in a budget section of the passenger cabin after the burned vessel was towed to shore. The governor said this suggested there were additional passengers not listed on the manifest.

Israel’s Palestinian minority has mostly sat out large protests against the government’s plan to overhaul the judiciary. It's a glaring absence in a battle that supporters say is meant to preserve Israel’s democratic ideals. The community may have the most to lose from the legal changes. Yet it harbors a deep sense that the system has always been rigged against it. It says court rulings have upheld years of discrimination and perpetuated the occupation of territories claimed by their Palestinian brethren. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced this week he was postponing the overhaul, following massive demonstrations and a workers’ strike. But he has not scrapped the plan, and protests are expected to continue.

The closely watched trial over a 2016 ski collision between Gwyneth Paltrow and the retired optometrist suing her for the injuries he sustained is expected to draw to a close, when attorneys give closing arguments and send the case to the eight-member jury. Terry Sanderson, 76, is suing Paltrow, claiming she skied out of control and crashed into him, leaving him with four broken ribs and a concussion with symptoms that have lasted years beyond the collision. Gwyneth Paltrow’s attorneys came close to wrapping up their case on Wednesday by relying on more experts to mount their defense on the seventh day of trial. The jury could get the case Thursday.
A tiny, public liberal arts college in Florida has become the staging ground for Gov. Ron DeSantis’ war on “woke.” The New College of Florida is known for its progressive approach to education and attracting a liberal student body. Now, the school finds itself caught in the crosshairs of America’s culture war. DeSantis’ allies say the school needs a conservative makeover. Sudden changes at New College have left the campus rattled and afraid. Some say they fear for their physical safety. Many worry teachers will be fired en masse. It’s increasingly hard to focus on their studies. Students and faculty say America should take note because the transformation could have national implications as DeSantis gears up for a likely presidential bid.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Twitter says it has removed thousands of tweets showing a poster promoting a “trans day of vengeance” protest in support of transgender rights in Washington, D.C., on Saturday.
The county that encompasses Manhattan added more than 17,000 residents in the year ended last July after losing almost 111,000 during the height of urban population decline stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. The U.S. Census Bureau released the latest estimates Thursday. Manhattan’s New York County was among several large, urban U.S. counties that either gained residents between July 2021 and July 2022 or stemmed the rate of losses compared with the same period a year earlier. The reversal was particularly notable in Sunbelt counties. International migration played a big part in the trend, but not every urban center is on the upswing. Los Angeles County lost 90,000 in the 12-month period.
Rookie Jalen Williams’ putback with less than a second remaining gave the Oklahoma City Thunder a 107-106 win over the Detroit Pistons. Oklahoma City entered the night two games under .500 and hanging onto the final Western Conference play-in spot. The Thunder were coming off a loss to the Charlotte Hornets and couldn’t afford another defeat against a team near the bottom of the league’s standings. Williams answered the call with 27 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Lu Dort scored 20 points, Aaron Wiggins scored 19 and Josh Giddey added 18 for the Thunder. Jaden Ivey had 24 to lead the Pistons.
Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy has been increasing his travel across Ukraine as his country's war with Russia enters its second year. Zelenskyy typically travels by train, and his movements are closely held for security reasons. A team of journalists from The Associated Press traveled with Zelenskyy aboard his train for two nights as he visited troops along the front lines and communities that have been liberated from Russian control. Zelenskyy is hoping his trips keep the public's attention on the war, particularly in parts of Ukraine where life can often appear to have returned to normal.
