A tornado reportedly touched down in southeastern Illinois, knocking down trees and damaging numerous homes and other buildings. Mount Carmel police Chief Mike McWilliams says people told officers they saw a tornado sweep through as a storm cut across the city’s south side about 9:30 p.m. Thursday. He says the storm left behind overturned trailers and sheds, downed trees and power lines, and several damaged homes. No injuries were reported. He says initial reports relayed to the National Weather Service that the city’s high school was damaged by the storm were incorrect and staff at the school reported it was in good shape. The storm may also have crossed the Wabash River into Knox County, Indiana.

Naomi Osaka is back at Roland Garros, and she spent time smiling and laughing at her own jokes during her pre-tournament news conference. She pulled out of last year's French Open before the second round. She had been fined after deciding not to attend the mandatory news conference when she won her first-round match. Osaka's last trip to the Grand Slam tournament in Paris was about her mindset and well-being more than her tennis. She says she was worried about how she would be received this time at the French Open.

Scientists who have monitored numerous outbreaks of monkeypox in Africa say they are baffled by the disease’s recent spread in Europe and North America. Cases of the smallpox-related disease haven’t previously been seen among people with no links to central and West Africa. But in the past week, Britain, Spain, Portugal, Italy, the United States, Sweden and Canada have all reported infections, mostly in young men who hadn’t traveled to Africa. On Friday, France, Germany, Belgium and Australia all confirmed their first cases of monkeypox. One of the theories British health officials are exploring is whether the disease is being sexually transmitted.

A commander at the plant says efforts to remove the dead from the battle were also underway.
