AARP Tax Aide program seeks volunteers

The AARP Tax Aide program is seeking volunteers for the 2018 tax filing season to help area taxpayers in need of assistance preparing and filing their Federal and State tax returns as well as volunteers to act as Intake Greeters. The program is available free to taxpayers with low and moderate income with special attention to those 60 and older.

Basic computer skills are a necessary qualification for tax preparers. Training in tax law will be provided the week of Jan. 15 to 19, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. AARP membership is not a requirement.

Battle of the Books back for fifth year

The fifth annual Battle of the Books will take place on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic School Gym, 1009 W. Kem Road. The Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program for local fourth grade students. Teams of up to 10 students read five books and come together to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge of the books they have read. The schools participating this year are Kendall, Allen, Riverview, Frances Slocum, two teams from Northview Elementary, two teams from Oak Hill Elementary, St. Paul, Lakeview, and a homeschool team for a total of 11 teams.

Housing authority closed Monday

Marion Housing authority will be closed Monday due to the holiday.

Solid waste change due to holiday

Due to the MLK holiday, Solid Waste Pick-up services for the City of Marion will run one day behind for Jan. 15 through Jan. 18

4-H Enrollment Open

Enrollment is now open until Jan. 15, 2018 for Grant County 4-H. Enroll online at in.4honline.com.

Grief Share classes begin Jan. 15

New Hope Baptist Church will be starting Grief Share classes for all those dealing with a recent loss. Classes will begin Jan. 15 at New Hope Baptist Church from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  There will be a $25 fee to cover the cost of the book.  For more information contact Rachel Rhoadarmer 970-324-0305.
