On Aug. 7, 2020, the 90th anniversary of the lynchings of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith, community members gathered soil from the northeast corner of the Grant County Courthouse to eventually send to the Equal Justice Initiative’s (EJI) Legacy Museum in Montgomery, Alabama.

The soil then needed to be sifted through twice, to settle, and is now ready to be placed in the jars for the journey to Montgomery. Organizers are inviting the community to take part in placing the soil into the jars.
