F. Eugene Pinkerton Nov. 16, 1933 - March 7, 2019

Eugene was born in Springport, IN, on November 16, 1933, to Fredrick R. and Ulah Mae Todd Pinkerton. He graduated from Marion High School, Class of 1951, and attended Anderson College, Anderson, IN, and Ball State University, Muncie, IN. He married Sylvia Lutes on Sept. 5, 1953.

On Jan. 3, 1956, Eugene was drafted to serve in the U.S. Army. He became a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. Along with the jump status, he played the trombone in the Division Band. The Band marched in parades and had performances most weekends, including playing for the Queen of England during her visit to the USA in 1957. After his active service, he returned to Ball State and graduated on Nov. 28, 1959.

He signed a contract with Marion Community Schools (MCS) to start teaching on Nov. 23, 1959. Thus, began a 40-year tenure, serving as a 6th grade teacher/coach at Washington School, Horace Mann (1961), and Martin Boots (1962). In August 1965, he was assigned to Washington School as Assistant Principal in charge of elementary for Washington, Allen, and Fremont schools. Between August 1966 to June 1997, he also served as Allen School Principal, Riverview School Principal, Justice Middle School Assistant Principal, and Justice Middle School Principal. He retired in June 1997.

In 1999, MCS asked him to return temporarily and again in 2002. His final day with MCS was June 23, 2003.

Eugene spent time in Sarasota, FL, until he and Sylvia moved there in August 2005. They moved to Lucedale, MS, in April 2015.

Eugene was a member of First Church of the Nazarene, Marion, IN, Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, Indiana Association of School Principals, Indiana State Teacher’s Association (Life Member), National Association of Elementary School Principals, NRA – National Rifle Association (Life Member), and NEA – National Education Association (Life Member).

He loved golf, horses, and especially camping and fishing in the UP, Michigan.

He is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Sylvia; three children: Dr. Jay Pinkerton (Emily), Lucedale, MS; Mrs. Joni L. Bradley (Brian), Sarasota, FL; and Patrick R. Pinkerton (Rita), Marion, IN; seven grandchildren: Jasen (Linzy) Pinkerton, Chicago, IL; Kelsey Pinkerton, Austin, TX; Olivia Rose and Lily Jae Pinkerton, Lucedale, MS; Noelle Cheaib, Orlando, FL; and Jonathan R. and James E. Pinkerton, Marion, IN.

Eugene died on March 7, 2019, in his home in Lucedale, MS, after being ill the previous six months.

Viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 26, 2019, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.

Eugene’s funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2019, at First Church of the Nazarene, 700 W. Kem Rd., Marion, IN. Pastor Greg Clark will be officiating with interment immediately following at Gardens of Memory in Marion.

Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
