Upland man charged in sex sting

BY Carolyn Muyskens - cmuyskens@chronicle-tribune.com

An Upland man was charged with attempted child molesting last month after police said he arranged to meet up with a 13-year-old girl in Winchester, Indiana. The 13-year-old girl turned out to be an undercover Randolph County Sheriff’s Department detective.

Charles Reeves, 53, began talking to a detective over Facebook Messenger in late February, according to court documents.

Authorities said Reeves asked the person he thought was a “girl” how old she was and what alcohol she liked to drink. He arranged to meet her at a hotel room in Winchester and made sexually explicit comments about what he would do to her.

When he arrived at the Randolph Inn and Suites, 890 E. Washington St., Winchester on Feb. 27, deputies took him into custody, finding cocaine, several bottles of alcohol and “a large bag of sex toys” in Reeves’s vehicle, according to court documents.

In an interview with detectives Reeves said he knew that he was trying to meet up with a 13-year-old girl, according to court documents.

He faces charges of attempted child molesting, a Level 1 felony, and child solicitation, a Level 4 felony.

Reeves bonded out of the Randolph County Jail on March 5 after an initial hearing in which he said he would be hiring his own attorney. He has not yet notified the court who he is hiring to represent him.

Notices from the court mailed to Reeves’s provided address, 3855 S. 1100 E., Marion, in March were returned for a bad address, according to court records.

A jury trial is currently scheduled for June 24, 2019 in Randolph County Circuit Court.
