Upland man dies after motorcycle crash

Muncie — A rural Upland man who had been critically injured when his motorcycle struck a deer in northwestern Delaware County died Tuesday morning at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.

The Muncie Star-Press reported Cory S. Jarrett, 37, died shortly after 7 a.m., according to Delaware County Coroner Rick Howell.

The accident was reported about 8:30 p.m. Monday in the 12100 block of North Delaware County Road 600-W, south of Gaston.

According to a report by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department, Jarrett was traveling northbound – about 1,200 feet south of McCreery Road – when a deer ran into the road and made contact with the right front of the motorcycle

Jarrett lost control, the report said, and he and his passenger – Kenda R. Janney, 26, also of rural Upland – were ejected from the mortorcycle.

Jarrett was reported to be suffering from “severe bleeding.. all over his body,” the report said.

Janney, who complained of facial and hip pain at the scene, was also taken to the Muncie hospital, where she was listed in good condition on Tuesday afternoon.

The motorcycle “continued down the roadway, skidding on its side” before leaving the road and coming to rest in a field, a deputy reported.

According to The Star-Press, witnesses said several deer were standing in the front yard of a nearby home when the accident took place.
