Scoops: Scam alert; New candidate filings

Scam alert

The Marion Police Department is alerting the public to an apparent scam. MPD Deputy Chief Stephen Dorsey said a man claiming to be an agent of the government called an 80-year-old Marion woman around noon on Wednesday. The caller said the woman's social security number had been compromised and multiple accounts and vehicles had been registered in her name in Texas, including one vehicle that had been found with blood in it. The caller told the woman she would be picked up in a taxi to be taken to withdraw money, according to Dorsey.

Later, a yellow taxi showed up at her house. The woman did not leave her home, police said. “The phone number used by the scam caller is (469) 415-4672. Police called the number and a man answered the phone, the man provided no information before hanging up,” Dorsey said.
