Scoops: City council tonight; demo orders; new candidate filings

City Council tonight

The Marion City Council meets tonight at 7 p.m. for a public hearing and second reading of an ordinance that would require contractors to pass a knowledge test as part of the registration process with the city. The council will also hear proposed changes to the salary ordinance for police and fire departments. The mayor is asking the council to authorize union benefits for the police and fire chief and deputy chiefs, benefits that are currently being paid to the police and fire leadership despite a state audit that says the benefits are unauthorized. Mayor Jess Alumbaugh hopes the ordinance will bring the city into compliance so it can continue paying the benefits.

Demolition orders approved

The Board of Works and Public Safety approved demolition orders for several Marion properties Monday morning:

n 2094 W. 10th St.

n 3702 S. Wigger St.

n 3701 S. Wigger St.

n 815 S. Branson St.

n 513 W. Fourth St.

Building Commissioner Jerry Foustnight said the structures at these locations may not be demolished right away, but he was seeking approval in advance so that the city would be shovel-ready when the weather and timing will be right to begin the process. The board also approved the sale of a vacant lot at 102 S. G St. for $800. City Property Manager Janet Pearson said the lot was sold to an adjacent property owner.
