Teen fatally shot on Felton Street

BY Carolyn Muyskens - cmuyskens@chronicle-tribune.com

A Marion teen died Tuesday night after being shot on Felton Street, according to Marion police.

Deputy Chief Stephen Dorsey identified the victim as Maurtreyviaun Sanders, 19, of Marion.

Sanders was shot in the 3200 block of South Felton Street, according to police, who were called to the scene with a report of shots fired in the area at 7:01 p.m. Tuesday night.

Police do not have any suspects in custody as of Wednesday afternoon.

After being fatally wounded, Sanders managed to travel two blocks on foot to a home in the 3400 block of South Felton Street, where his father was working for a home health care service, Dorsey said.

The victim was able to tell his father that someone had tried to rob him but immediately after that became unresponsive, according to Dorsey.

The father called 911 and drove Sanders to MGH, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 7:50 p.m., after attempts to resuscitate him.

An autopsy performed Wednesday morning in Fort Wayne determined that Sanders died from a single gunshot wound to the clavicle which resulted in massive blood loss, according to Grant County Coroner Chris Butche.

The Tuesday night homicide brings the total number of homicides this year in Grant County to nine. Butche said it's the highest number of homicides he's seen in his four-year tenure as coroner.

Violent crime figures reported by the Marion Police Department and the Grant County Sheriff's Department bear this out and suggest that this could be Grant County's highest homicide rate in decades.

Despite some social media reports that one suspect was in custody, Dorsey said the arrest of a 17-year-old in the same area as the shooting was unrelated and the teenager in custody is not a suspect.

“He is not a suspect in this homicide,” Dorsey said.

Police are still trying to determine if there were any witnesses to the crime. Dorsey said the teen arrested at the intersection of 33rd Street and Felton Street has told police he did not witness the shooting.

Dorsey said police collected a single spent shell casing from the scene. Police have not yet identified the type of gun involved in the shooting.

The Marion Police Department asks that anyone with information about the homicide call MPD at 765-662-9981 or Crime Stoppers at 765-662-8477.
