Man arrested on child porn charges

BY Carolyn Muyskens - cmuyskens@chronicle-tribune.com

A Van Buren man was arrested Wednesday on charges of possession of child pornography.

Capt. Ed Beaty of the Grant County Sheriff's Department said a Fort Wayne-based FBI agent alerted local law enforcement about 42-year-old Chad Thomas Neeley at the beginning of 2018.

The FBI monitors commonly-shared electronic files and file sharing networks for child pornography, Beaty said, and the agent had located “activity” at an IP address registered to Neeley's residence in Van Buren.

The Sheriff's Department then obtained a search warrant for Neely's residence and during the search retrieved computers and electronic devices from the home.

Officers found images that were determined to be child pornography on the devices.

Beaty said he did not know how many electronic files were found, but Neeley has been charged with two counts possession of child pornography, a Level 6 felony. Beaty said the number of counts often reflects the number of images or videos determined to be child pornography, but the determination of charges and counts is the responsibility of the Grant County Prosecutor's Office.

Neeley was arrested Wednesday at the Grant County Sheriff's Department and released the same day on a $600 cash bond.

An initial court hearing is set for Oct. 16 at 8:15 a.m. in Superior Court III.
