Paulgar Delicieux

Paulgar Delicieux, 74, Plain Mapou, Ile de LaGonave, Haiti, passed to his eternal rest Thursday, Sept. 27 at the Wesleyan Hospital, Anse-A-Galet, LaGonave, Haiti. Pastor Paul served as the founding pastor at Plain Mapou church that became affiliated with L’Eglise Wesleyanne d’Haiti.

In the mid-1970’s he was called to leave a prosperous sisal business to serve his Lord. He located his family in the remote village of Plain Mapou where they began ministry in a small brush arbor church with a nine-person congregation. Within a few years his dedication and leadership were noted by missionary Miss Gertrude Fulk. She introduced a work team from the Evangelical Mennonite Church (now UCC), Upland, serving in Anse-A-Galet to Pastor Paul and the people at Plain Mapou. Together plans were made to construct the first permanent church building. Work began in December 1979 and completion was in December 1981.

Plain Mapou has continued to host work teams and receive support from the three churches in the Upland area to build, repair and maintain the ever-growing compound. The ministry programs now include a congregation of 600-700 adults and children; a PreK-Grade 12 school for 400+ students housed in 10 classrooms; a clinic to serve pregnant women with programs healthcare and home training for women and children; a sewing school; and an outreach ministry to another remote village.

Pastor Paul served many years as President of the LaGonave District of the Wesleyan Church of Haiti. He is well-known for his outstanding leadership of and example to pastors throughout the nation and for his urgency in sharing the Gospel to all people. All who knew him will remember his ever-present smile, his laughter and his humble spirit in service to Jesus Christ.

He leaves his wife of over 50 years, Mme. Paul. He is also survived by their sons and families—Lem, Haiti; Donald, Canada; Edson, USA; two daughters, a brother Elicier (Janicia) Delicieux and their children; mother-in-law, “Mama” Toussaint; sister-in-law, Mme. Jeanot, brother-in-law, Lucsama Toussaint and his family; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13 at L’Eglise Wesleyanne d’Haiti, Plain Mapou. Burial will be on the Plain Mapou Wesleyan Church grounds. A concurrent service will be held at the Pierce United Methodist Church, Upland, at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13.
