Orville L. 'Sam' Donaldson Sept. 7, 1929 - April 9, 2018

Orville L. “Sam” Donaldson, 88, Marion, passed away at Wesleyan Healthcare Center in Marion on April 9, 2018. He was born in Kentucky on Sept. 7, 1929, to the late Tollie and Thelma (Reed) Donaldson.

Sam graduated from Marion High School in 1947. Two years later, on Jan. 30, 1949, he married Leona Ramp, and they became the parents of two sons and one daughter. For nearly 50 years, Sam owned and operated Howard Auto Sales in Marion alongside Don Powell. He served on the Board of Directors of the Better Business Bureau and was a past member of the Meshingomesia Country Club, The Aero Club, and Arbor Trace Golf Club. Sam also served as Past President of Marion Parents Athletic Association and was a former manager and coach for Marion Little League Baseball.

Sam enjoyed playing golf and traveling. Some of his most memorable trips were to Hawaii, China, and Hilton Head. He will be remembered as a kind, loyal, and outgoing man in his business and in his family life.

He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Leona; sons, Gary (Jenée) Donaldson, Covington, Louisiana, and Keith (Kathy) Donaldson, Bradenton, Florida; daughter, Jo-Ellen (Kirk) Jacobsen, Acworth, Georgia; grandsons, Sam Jacobsen, Drew Jacobsen, and Josh Donaldson; granddaughters, Dana (Kyle) Peters, and Abby Donaldson; sister, Valerie (Clyde) Thornell; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents; sister, Patty Stevens; and brother, Elwood Donaldson.

The family will receive visitors from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 13, 2018, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion.

Services to celebrate Sam’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2018, at the funeral home with Pastor Mick Simpkins officiating. Burial will follow at Grant Memorial Park.
