Permit season nears

BY Kaitlin Gebby - kgebby@chronicle-tribune.com

The Grant County Area Planning office is preparing for permit season as spring draws closer.

Warm weather means roofing projects, deck builds and home remodels will be underway by homeowners and local contractors.

Director of Area Planning Larry Strange said most people aren’t aware of whether or not they need a permit for their spring or summer projects.

The Area Planning section of the Grant County website details when a permit is needed. Grant County Area Planning can grant permits to homeowners and contractors within the county outside of Marion, including Matthews, Jonesboro, Van Buren, Upland, Fairmount and Sweetser.

Homeowners or contractors must have a permit for property remodeling and additions, structure building, such as a new home or barn, deck building or adding in a swimming pool.

Strange said most projects require a permit if they’re not simple cosmetic fixes.

Without the required permit, visible work being done on the home or property can result in the termination of the project and fines billed to the homeowner.

Permit Manager Brenda Harrison said some permits, such as electrical and roofing, are granted the same day. Others require a series of inspections prior to, during and after the project.

According to Harrison, the office typically receives 30 applications a month for permits during the warm weather months. In 2017, due to a hail storm, she said permit applications went as high as 60 a month for roof repairs.

Those applying for a permit must bring a plot plan drawing depicting the property, dimensions as well as the current structures and future structures. Remodels require a list of all work that is to be completed within the home.

Contractors seeking a permit must come to the office, located at 405 S. Adams St., with a signed contract in hand stating the homeowner is allowing the contractor to apply for and retrieve the permit.

If homeowners or contractors have questions about permits, they can call the permit clerk at (765) 668 4765, or the Marion Area Planning office at (765) 662 9981.
