Thank you to all who helped find Skylea

Dear Editor:

On behalf of the Gas City Police Department, I would like to express our sincere thoughts and prayers with Skylea’s family during this time. There is no greater loss than that of a child. I would like to ask the community to give them this time to grieve and start the healing process.

As a community this is also our time to start the healing process and allow the criminal justice system to do its job. There were hundreds of people that responded when asked to help in searching for Skylea and words cannot express the gratitude we have for all of you. As always in our community, when we need you, the response is overwhelming. We could not have covered the areas we did without you.

To the businesses and individuals who brought water, food, telephone calls and written words of concern and encouragement, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. We are proud of our community because you care as much as we do and this Labor Day Weekend showed that.

To all the departments that came to assist in the search and offer support in all aspects of this investigations, our community thanks you. The response came from agencies all over the state in offering everything from manpower to assets to be used during the search. There are too many departments to list, and I certainly would not want to leave anyone out. But our community and I thank you.

To the Indiana State Police Department who responded without hesitation. They worked alongside our department and went out into our community treating it as if it was their own during this entire investigation. As a community you are unaware of the amount of time these officers and investigators put into looking for Skylea. I can tell you that there were several days with little to no sleep, but finding Skylea was everyone’s priority. On behalf of the city and the Gas City Police Department we cannot thank you enough in assisting to locate Skylea and allowing the healing process to start.

To the members of the Gas City Police Department I want to publicly thank you for the effort and time that was given by you in this investigation. Whatever was needed, you guys were there to step in and give everything you have. We have a tendency to forget that police officers and dispatchers are human and have families too. They are forced to push their emotions and feelings to the side in order to be able to do what is needed. To their families I just want you to know how proud I am of each and every one of them. When the community and I needed them they were there. I’m aware of the sacrifice that you as family members give when they are away from home working the extra hours. I want you to know that you can be proud of them for what they did last week for Skylea.

Tim Eckstein, Gas City Police Chief
