Fairmount man dies in crash

by Andrew Maciejewski - amaciejewski@chronicle-tribune.com

A Fairmount man died Friday around 6 a.m. after an alleged drunk driver caused a multi-vehicle accident in Howard County, according to police reports.

The Howard County Coroner’s Office pronounced Thomas E. Davis, 39, dead at the scene near Ind. 22 and Howard County Road 700 East.

Investigators say Everett W. Phipps, 57, of Kokomo, crossed the centerline while driving eastbound on Ind. 22 in a 2002 Chevy Astro van before striking a westbound 2013 Dodge Dart driven by Ryan A. Fenstermaker, 39, of Gas City head-on.

The force of the crash caused Fenstermaker’s car to spin 180 degrees.

Davis was driving behind the Dart on a 2015 Harley Davidson motorcycle before Fenstermaker’s car spun around, causing Davis to hit the Dart's front end in a head-on collision, police said.

Fenstermaker and Phipps were transported to Howard Regional Health where they were in stable condition as of deadline Friday.

Howard County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jordan J. Buckley said the case is being treated as an operation while intoxicated causing death investigation since the initial investigation indicated Phipps was under the influence while driving.

“Any necessary charges will be forwarded to the Howard County Prosecutor due to the nature of his injuries,” the press release states.

The Greentown Fire Department, Howard County Coroner’s Office, Howard County Emergency Management Agency and paramedics from Howard Regional Health assisted on the scene.

The accident is still under investigation.
