One dead, three injured in crash

A Warren man was killed and three others were injured following an accident Friday night at the intersection of C.R. 350 North and C.R. 400 East.

According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Department’s preliminary investigation, a truck traveling southbound on C.R. 400 East around 8:02 p.m. Friday approaching the stop sign at the intersection failed to yield the right of way to a car traveling eastbound on C.R. 350 North and struck the car on the driver’s side door.

The car was found sitting in a soybean field in the southeast corner of the intersection, and the truck was found flipped on its top south of the intersection in a pasture, according to the report.

The driver of the car, William L. Sparks, 55, of Warren, had to be extricated from his vehicle and was found dead on the scene, the report states.

Four individuals were traveling in the truck, and the preliminary investigation determined Jessica Edwards, 31, to be the driver, but Captain Ed Beaty of the sheriff's department said Monday that investigators are still trying to confirm who was driving the truck at the time of the crash.

“Some people have retracted some of their original statements saying somebody else was driving, so we are in the process of proving or disproving those statements at this time,” he said.

Officials are also awaiting the results of toxicology reports as they continue to investigate, Beaty said.

Grant County Sheriff’s deputies, Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department, Marion General Hospital Ambulance service and Grant County E.M.A. assisted on the scene Friday night.

Sparks’s lone passenger in the car, Lisa Reece, 52, and one of the occupants of the truck, Emily Hillsamer, 18, were both transported to Fort Wayne Lutheran Hospital to treat their injuries. A hospital official confirmed both had been discharged as of Monday afternoon.

Two other individuals who were in the truck refused treatment at the scene, and Edwards was transported to Marion General Hospital for treatment.

The sheriff’s department, Grant County Coroner’s Office and Indiana State Police are conducting the ongoing investigation.
