We should blame ourselves for mass shootings

Why do Tragedies like El Paso Happen?

We weep with the many families who have lost loved ones in another senseless act of violence! This week it was in a Walmart in El Paso, Texas and a city street in Dayton, Ohio. Next week it may be in some other city in another state, in a different store, school, church or any other place where innocent people gather simply going about their own business. Officials will rush in and subdue the perpetrator one way or another and another community will be stained with the blood of the innocent.

Meanwhile lawmakers will point their fingers at one another in blame and wring their hands wanting to pass another kind of legislation that will restrict the rights of those who are civil, laws which are meaningless to those intent on being uncivil since lawbreakers don’t care two wits about being obedient to another law!

TV Pundits will argue over how to prevent such heinous crimes in the future from happening when all the while the answer is right under our noses!

Let’s be honest and admit it, our society has brought this carnage upon ourselves! We are to blame! We are now, and have been reaping the harvest of ideas that have brought us to the place where a person can kill without remorse or regret. Let’s examine some of these ideas:

1. For generations our children have been taught in their public school education that life has no meaning or purpose. It is taught that due to evolutionary design the existence of humanity is merely a result of random chance. Survival of the fittest is at work among us and morality is merely a creation of humankind to control the behavior of the masses. If everything is amoral, then what difference does it make to take a life or to break a law, since there are no eternal consequences?

2. We groan when 22 innocent people are killed by a lone gunman. At the same time 1,765 innocent lives were terminated on Friday by the hands of abortionist all across the United States. Already this year 561,714 babies have lost their lives in the United States. Over 24 million innocent lives have been snuffed out around the world already this year! Why do we weep for merely 22 lives alone? www.numberofabortions.com/

3. We should not think video games that simulate and promote the killing of role-played characters does not have an impact upon those who play these games hours upon end. The average child now spends an average of 15 hours per week simulating real life actions. Anyone who practices 15 hours a week is sure to become proficient at whatever they practice. www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-5850109/Children-play-average-15-hours-video-games-week-parents-concerned-violence.html

3. For many generations now the principles and teachings of Judeo Christianity have been stripped from the landscape of our nation only to be relegated to a handful of dying churches. Those principles teach such things as:

n The God of the Bible is the author of all life.

n All life is sacred from conception and of infinite value and worth regardless of race or gender.

n Mankind is to fear God and to reverence Him alone as each person will one day have to stand before God giving a full account of their actions while on the earth.

n There is a moral code to live by, concisely stated in the Ten Commandments and each person is ultimately accountable to God’s law.

n Respect and compassion for our neighbor is the responsibility of every person.

n The teachings of Jesus Christ such as forgiving one another, turning the other cheek, loving your enemies and doing good to all men is for all people, not just the religious.

What part of these teachings are offensive? Even those who do not believe in God should be able to agree that there are no laws against being kind, compassionate and loving! However, we have ridiculed the teachings of the Bible to the point where it is a forbidden book that no one reads!

4. We have forgotten that mankind is capable of unspeakable evil and we gasp when such evil is committed. Children who grow up without the discipline of parents and without the pain of consequences to their behavior will become the monsters of our day! They will be “lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.” (2 Timothy 3:2-4)

This is the culture in which we now reside! We have created it, now we have to live in it! If you want to change the culture in which we live, each one of us must humble ourselves before the God of Heaven, repent of our sinful ways and seek to walk in the ways He has set before us! Only then will be able to live together in peace and shop the aisles of Walmart without fear!
