I&M warns of phone scams

BY Staff Reports - ctreport@indy.rr.com

Customers of Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) Company are being targeted by phone scammers. This is a part of a larger trend of phone scams targeting utility companies, according to a press release from I&M.

These scammers can use different telephone numbers to falsely identify themselves as members of I&M. In some cases it can appear as an authentic I&M phone number.

They will typically claim that the customer is late on their payment and must pay immediately. If not the customer’s electricity will be cut off.

I&M states it would never ask its customers for any immediate payment. The company also said the first warning of cutting power wouldn’t come by phone but in a letter.

The scammers will ask the customer to arrange the payment on a separate phone call with a separate phone number.

The scammers may ask for payment in various ways from giving banking information, credit card numbers or debit card numbers.

I&M directs anyone who comes in contact with these calls to hang up immediately and call their Customer Operations Center number, 800-311-4634 to report it.

To check the status of their bill, customers can go to Customer Operations Center website, or use the I&M app.
