Marion man dies after car crash

BY Carolyn Muyskens - cmuyskens@chronicle-tribune.com

A Marion man died Monday afternoon after he was hit by a car while crossing the street that morning.

Police said the man, 64-year-old Peter DeJanovich, was airlifted to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, where he was pronounced dead at 5:15 p.m. The crash had caused both internal and head injuries.

According to Capt. Stephen Dorsey of the Marion Police Department, the accident occurred at the intersection of Spencer and Baldwin avenues at around 10:30 a.m.

The driver, Albert Mayforth, 85, of Marion, told police he was driving his 2011 Chevy Traverse southbound on Baldwin. Mayforth remembered checking his passenger-side mirror for vehicle traffic as he merged into the right lane, he told police.

Mayforth also told police he remembered the light being green before he entered the intersection and struck DeJanovich, who was walking east across the intersection.

A witness, however, told police that all traffic was stopped when the driver entered the intersection, Dorsey said.

DeJanovich was unable to make any statement to police after the incident. He was taken to Marion General Hospital before he was flown to Fort Wayne for treatment.

Dorsey said the man died of multiple blunt force injuries.

Police do not suspect that alcohol was a factor in the accident.

The investigation is ongoing, Dorsey said.
