E. Joan (Charles) Malott May 16, 1931 - May 13, 2019

Born May 16, 1931 in Huntington County, Indiana.

Graduated from Converse, Indiana High School and nursing school in Indianapolis.

Joan leaves behind her husband of 36 years, Don Malott, five children, Dean and Dave McCuan of Phoenix, Arizona, Cindy McCuan of Fairmont, West Virginia, Melissa (McCuan) Winburn (Jake) of Indianapolis, and Mindy McCuan of Alamogordo, New Mexico, a brother, John Charles of Swayzee, Indiana, eight grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

She worked as an OB/Gyn nurse for 36 years mostly at the Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo, New Mexico where she became a mother figure for many young service men.

Joan was a generous, loving person who welcomed the neighborhood children to enjoy her home baked cookies and the never empty fruit bowl. She loved going to El Paso with her friends to shop and have lunch which always turned into an adventure. When family came to visit, Joan took pride in giving the NM tour to them. She loved to sew and made many of her children’s as well as her children’s friend’s beautiful clothes. She worked the night shift so she could care for her children during the day. Sleep was a precious commodity for her but she carried on tirelessly and raised five admirable children.

In later years, Joan moved back to Indiana to marry the love of her life where she has enjoyed traveling, and crocheting afghans for all her children, grandchildren, friends, patients at the Children’s Hospital as well as some red, white, and blue ones for veterans. Joan loved her flowers and could be seen stopping to admire their beauty. When someone came to visit, she loved going shopping and getting lunch, although she never spent any money unless it was something with Purdue insignia.

Joan enjoyed Mother’s Day this year having breakfast at her favorite restaurant, visits and phone calls from her children, reading the many cards she received from family and friends, and admiring the flowers from family and her ever faithful (adopted) son Paul from Holloman AFB now living in his native Hawaii. She passed peacefully at home, the morning after this wonderful Mother’s Day.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2019 at Bethel United Methodist Church 5252 W. 52nd Street Indianapolis, Indiana with visitation from 12 noon until time of service. Interment will follow in Bethel Cemetery. Stevens Mortuary 5520 W. 10th Street Indianapolis, IN 46224 is entrusted with arrangements.
